Jonathan's note to Mrs. George Terrence at Green Glades, Stamford, arrived in the same mail as a certain letter in green ink to Mr. Terrence. George recognized the ominous green ink, for it was the third such letter he had received, and he fervently hoped his wife and daughter would have mail of their own to distract their attention.

"Who in the world writes you in green ink, George?" his wife inquired, but he was glad she was preoccupied with her own letter.

"I'll read it later," he said, stuffing it into his pocket. "Nothing of any importance comes on Saturday, you know. Why are you scowling over your own letter, my dear?"

"Someone is bothering me again about an old roommate," Hazel said crossly. "I do think it's a nuisance to be expected to keep up with everyone you've ever known."

"That's not like you, dear," George remonstrated severely, glad to have the subject of green ink sidetracked. "As I recall your stories, you had some very happy times at college."

Both George and Hazel were excessively loyal, as a rule, to any demands from their alma maters, though George had been miserably lost at Yale and Hazel had barely finished one semester at Sweetbriar.

"This wasn't a college friend," Hazel said. "This is concerned with a girl I lived with when I was studying the theater. You wouldn't remember her."
